Candle Care: Getting a Full Burn Every Time

Most decorative candles are thrown away with a third of the wax unused. That is not a defect in the candle — it is nearly always tunnelling, and it is set in the first hour of the first burn.

The first burn decides everything

Wax has a memory. On its first burn a candle melts outward to a certain diameter, and on every burn after that it will not reliably melt past that line. If you blow it out after twenty minutes, you have taught it to burn a narrow well straight down the middle.

Let the first burn run until the melted pool reaches the full width of the candle. For a moulded candle that is usually one to two hours. Set aside the time before you light it.

Trim the wick, every time

A wick longer than about 5mm produces a tall, flickering flame that makes soot and burns the wax faster than the scent can carry. Trim it before each burn, not after — the carbon cap that forms as it cools is the bit you want to remove.

Why the scent disappears

Scent travels in the melted pool, not the flame. A candle in a draught, or one that never forms a full pool, throws very little scent no matter how strongly it smelled in the box. Keep it away from fans and aircon vents, and give it time to form a pool before you judge it.

Burn time limits

Three to four hours is the practical maximum for a single session. Past that the wax pool gets deep, the flame grows, and the candle starts consuming itself quickly. Let it cool fully before relighting.

Tealights and multi-piece sets

Tealights are designed to burn all the way down in one session — they do not tunnel, so the first-burn rule does not apply. Keep them in their metal or plastic cups and on a heat-tolerant surface; a burning tealight gets hot enough to mark a table.

Decorative candles that are better unlit

Heavily embossed and moulded candles lose their detail as soon as they burn — that is what the wax was shaped for. It is entirely reasonable to buy one as an object and never light it. If you do light it, expect the design to go first.

Safety, briefly

Never leave a lit candle unattended, keep it away from anything that can catch, and stop using it once around 10mm of wax remains at the base.
